Konstantin Buteyko · 1923–2003

The story behind the method

The Buteyko Method takes its name from Konstantin Buteyko, a Soviet doctor born in a small village near Kyiv, in what is now Ukraine. After serving at the front during the Second World War, he trained at the First Moscow Institute of Medicine.

As a young doctor in the early 1950s, he noticed that patients tended to breathe faster and deeper as their illness worsened. He also suffered from severe high blood pressure himself, and by his own account, in 1952 he found that reducing his breathing eased his symptoms. That personal discovery shaped the rest of his career.

He went on to develop a set of breathing exercises, which were studied in the Soviet Union, including with people with asthma. In 1980 the Soviet health ministry ordered the method to be introduced for treating bronchial asthma. It has since spread to countries including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Today it is taught around the world, and it is the foundation of the sessions I offer.
